Portfolio Work

Recently I had an interview with the a representative for the London College of fashion. After showing her some of my personal paintings and drawings I had done she suggested that I would be more suited for the illustration course at LCF instead of Fashion Design. This was due to the fact that I had a lack of fashion based work in my portfolio and she suggested to work on that as much as possible in order to get into LCF. I am not intending on applying for LCF however it is part of UAL as is Central Saint Martins and so I have taken her advice and written myself a brief to create a good portfolio of work. I have created this brief by reading fashion design books and reading various blogs and lectures from the internet.

Looking at Universities

UCAS Fair London Olympia 2013

On the of November I went to the UCAS fair at London Olympia which housed all of the art based universities in Britain under one roof.

After talking with my family and teachers i have discovered that Fashion is the pathway I want to chose to study. It is the subject and art I know and love best. Fashion is something I understand and something i understand has a lottery depth and beauty than most people seem to think it has.

A course i have found that I particularly like is the Central Saint Martins course of Fashion Design with Marketing. The additional contextual knowledge alongside the fashion creativity and practical appeals to me, as i feel it will give me more knowledge of the industry I wish to be a part of.

The UCAS Fair introduced me to universities that O had not heard of such as the East London University, the university of Coventry and Falmouth. I picked up a few prospectuses and chose the ones i preferred.

Another university was the university of Westminster. When i poked up a prospectus i saw a photo on the cover of Ashleigh Williams fashion east 2013 show! When i asked one of the students they confirmed that Williams and in fact Claire Barrow studied at Westminster university and had recently graduated.

Being an admirer of the fashion east designers I was ecstatic with excitement and devoured the prospectus. I then researched everything i could about Westminster university. It will be another one of my choices of universities to apply for.

Istituto Marangoni

Yesterday I had a consultation with Anna Licholat a marketing and business development officer who worked at the university Istituto Marangoni. Istituto Marangoni is a university which has been enriching the fashion industry with new creative individuals for the past 77 years! It is one of the oldest fashion institutions in the world with campuses based not only in London but in Paris, Milano and shanghai! Students have the option to study in either lone of the three campuses, excluding shanghai as they teach a non english based course.

The facilities were very basic with everything that one might need for the course. Additionally the students are not required to purchase any books and the library is complete with over 40 different magazines from around the world with the latest trends.

The sewing room was my favorite and i had a glance at some of the work the students were producing both in 3d and portfolio work.

Course I am interested in.

The stylist course is something i never really knew anything about. However Anna told me that the work they do fills more of their portfolio and they have more contextual work to do as the stylist has to create an image and a lifestyle. The stylists spend most of their time in the photoshoots studio.

Edinburgh University

In the holidays i visited Edinburgh with my family to have a look at the fine art course they offered.

Whilst there I watched a talk about the art department and what it offers. The space is absolutely fantastic! Each student is assigned a personal work space and each department is well involved with each other to help produce creative pieces of artwork. It was a really homely atmosphere and a wonderful building in a beautiful city. 

I then went to the talk on the design course. I discovered that in the fashion department Edinburgh won three of four national fashion awards for menswear, womenswear and jewellery design.

Apter walking around and viewing the beautiful artwork i decided that Edinburgh was definitely a place i could see myself studying and living. The university believes you arrive an armature and you depart a professional. From what i saw today Edinburgh could turn me into the professional i want to be in te future. The university additionally made me feel more confident about choosing to study fashion.

Hunters Hill

Hunters Hill Harbour Sculpture Exhibition

During the summer holidays in August I took the long 24 hour journey to Sydney Australia to stay with my cousins for three weeks. The Flights were incredibly long and extremely relaxing, and I was so happy to finally land in Australia at 6:47 am on a Saturday morning in at the Sydney airport.

Before leaving for Australia I researched any art jobs that I could do whilst I was there. Luckily I found out about an exhibition that was taking place by the council at Hunters Hill. They were requesting help for their Sculpture Exhibition which took place by the harbour. It was both an indoor and outdoor exhibition and it converted the public's usual park into a Gallery.

The Sculptures part of the outdoor exhibition worked fantastically with the out door space. Many of the sculptures had a natural theme to them. Each animal sculpture worked fantastically with the scenery and confused many of the four legged friends that passed it on their evening walks. The more modern sculptures created a beautiful clash with the nature of the trees and the man made installations. 

Over all the whole atmosphere was absolutely beautiful! The staff were amazingly friendly and I had the pleasure of meeting some of the most interesting art enthusiastic people of my life. Thank you to all who organised the Hunters hill exhibition and thank you for giving me the opportunity to help.

Old Doodles...

Here are some pencil sketches I found that I created when I was 15-16. To see my work now and how it has changed and developed is crazy! I have learnt so many new techniques and styles and developed so many different ways of looking at the concept of art and how it can be used in the world. Year 13 is going to be amazing! Thank you BRIT School!

My Sydney Adventure

In 2013 I decided I didn't want to go on holiday with my parents. I felt that my parents had given me so much by letting me move to London that for me to go on holiday with them would be too much money to be spent on me. However when my Art college results came in my Grandy was so impressed by my results he surprised me with a plane ticket to go to Sydney and stay with my cousins for three weeks! I was absolutely gobsmacked! I was and still am so grateful to him for giving me the opportunity and experience I had. Personally I feel like the luckiest girl in the world and I don't know how I can ever make it up to my Grandy for such a lovely surprise. I will think of a way one day.

Human Resources Convention

Creativity in Workplace

During my stay in Sydney Australia I volunteered at a Human Resources convention at Darling harbour. On my break I sneaked into one of the talks being hosted in the lecture theatre. The man who came in to talk was Todd Sampson.

CEO of Leo Burnett, one of Australia's top advertising companies and co-creator of earth hour Sampson was a fascinating individual who showed genuine care for the world around him. Charismatic, funny and wonderfully inspiring I had never seen someone so young speak such sense.

If this guy couldn't get anymore interesting he had concurred Mount Everest and met with Sir Edmund Hillary! His story of this time in his life showed a time when he had to face terrifying situations, with climbing the mountain and meeting his hero. Sampson showed me through this story that unless you were willing to face a scary situation with courage you wouldn't get anywhere in life.

Courage and Creativity are two things that battle with each other in the human mind. Creativity not only shows individuality but also alows you to express yourself in many ways. However courage is something we as human beings find it hard to muster and so we sometimes hide our creativity and individuality. In conclusion we need a balance of creativity and courage in life to aim higher and reach our goals. Without courage we are weak. Without creativity we are not unique and individual and we are disposable.

What did I learn?

Be creative people. Don't become a robot in society. Stand up and don't be afraid to show your creative skills and thoughts.

Camberwell College

Camberwell College

I went to visit Camberwell College of Arts with my school, to see the post graduate show. I had never heard of Camberwell before and did not know anything about what the college had to offer. However I now know that Camber well is part of UAL and specializes in Design, Fine Art and Conversation. It is one of the foremost Art and Design universities in the world and works closely with other UAL Universities, such as Chelsea and Wimbledon University.

The graduate show was very impressive. It was very inspiring to see so many different techniques used to create some very unique pieces of artwork. One could see that much thought and time and effort had gone into making each piece. When I read the titles of some of the artwork I understood what the artist was trying to convey and the message or feeling they were attempting to channel through their piece. For this I was truly taken aback by how professional the exhibition was. 

Oxford Brookes

Oxford Brookes Open Day

A while ago, before summer, me and my mum went to Oxford to visit the open day of Oxford Brookes. We fell in love with oxford! The area was beautiful and had a really creative feel to it. We agreed it was like a safer version of London in the countryside! It seemed like the perfect place for a young artist to grow and learn in a great and beautiful city.

Beautiful Buildings!

On visiting Oxford Brookes university we looked around the art building and attended a lecture on the fine art course that they offered. The course was led by many practising artists who specialised in many different areas.

For lunch we stopped in the canteen and had a lovely meal consisting of a Jacket potato and beans!

However after looking at the layout and the grounds of the university I decided that although the city was beautiful the university wasn't for me. I personally felt that I should try to aim higher such as central saint martins or Lancaster.

On passing the Oxford University and the Ruskin school of Fine Art me and my mum decided then and there that we would go home and immediately arrange another trip to Oxford city to look at the Ruskin School of fine art.
